Whether you are professionally trained or just do it for fun, Flagler College’s Glee Club gives students an opportunity to sing and express themselves musically.
While secretary of Glee Club Melissa Garcia admits to having little experience singing professionally, she loves the environment of Glee Club because it is a great place to sing and learn from others to grow.
“We just want to encourage musical individuality. We welcome all music, all singers whether they have had experience or no experience at all,” Garcia said.
The Glee Club gives many opportunities for its members to do that. Between themed shows once a month, riff offs (separating into two teams and competing to come up with the next song to sing, based off of what the other team is singing), and many other events, there is always an opportunity for musical enthusiasts to attend and sing your heart out at.
“People live in the residence halls and all they want to do is sing at the top of their lungs, but can’t without disturbing a neighbor,” Garcia said.
Senior Victoria Scanlon joined her sophomore year after a friend suggested she should sign up.
“My friend, Derek, heard me singing to myself at Club Night and he said ‘Do you like to sing? Glee Club is over there.’ And then I ran where he pointed so that I could go sign up,” Scanlon said.
Her favorite part of the Glee Club is how much of a family they have become. They work together to make all the decisions as a group, including what theme the next show should be, what their shirts should look like, and volunteering together at Day of Service.
Scanlon also loves having the ability to sing in a loving and supportive group. There is never any judgement in Glee Club, and they work hard to ensure that everyone feels supported and comfortable.
“I have never ever felt anything but support from the group. There is never an ounce of judgement. I absolutely love being able to do something that I love just for fun, around people who feel the way I do and who are always there to give support,” Scanlon said.
If interested in joining, Glee Club meets every Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in Student Center room 215.
